The shelves look very nice

The shelves look very nice, however the chanel for the set screws on one of the shelves are stripped out. This prevents it from being secured to the wall.
Joe from The Mortise & the Hare corrected this issue by sending a new shelf. He was very prompt in addressing this issue.
Again, the shelves are beautiful and highly recommend!

Awesome craftsmanship

Rail is sturdy and well attached. The walnut shelf itself is heavy and mounts dead flat.

Classic coffee bar shelf

Got the walnut shelf with the brass rail for our mugs. The rail keeps everything secure when reaching up.

WHO WE ARE

Rooted in Reciprocity

True luxury is a cycle, not a straight line. We source our timber exclusively from sustainable North American yields, and through our partnership with One Tree Planted, we commit to planting a native hardwood tree for every shelf purchased. It is our way of ensuring the forest remains as permanent as the product we build.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

What gallery rail finishes do you offer?

Unlacquered brass (ages to a patina), black steel, and polished nickel. Polished nickel is supplier-limited: max 36" shelf length, end posts only (no center connector posts in nickel right now). Support posts are spaced about 24–30" apart depending on your custom size so the rail stays rigid.

What’s the difference between a shelf with a gallery rail and the DIY kit?

A gallery-rail floating shelf is the complete made-to-order hardwood shelf with a size-matched rail. The Unlacquered Brass Gallery Rail DIY Kit is rail-only hardware for a shelf you already have. Browse complete builds in Gallery Rail Shelving.

What is a gallery rail floating shelf?

A solid hardwood floating shelf with a metal rail along the front (and optional side returns) so bottles, books, and display pieces don’t tip forward. Ours use hidden HOVR brackets. The rail is a front ledge on the shelf, not a wall-track system.

What is the actual weight capacity of these shelves?

When anchored into wall studs with the included HOVR™ cleat, shelves 1.75" and thicker are rated up to 300 lbs at 8" depth under our Level for Life™ guarantee. 1.5" Slim shelves are rated at 125 lbs. Always follow the install guide and hit studs for the rated load.

How do you guarantee the shelf won't sag over time?

Traditional rod-based brackets create a single point of failure that eventually bows. Our "No-Sag Guarantee" is possible because our system uses linear support. The interlocking aluminum cleat runs three quarters of the length of the shelf, effectively making the hardwood an extension of your wall’s internal structure.

Is the finish safe for moisture-rich kitchens and bathrooms?

Yes. Every board is sealed with a professional-grade, water-resistant Matte hard wax oil. This finish protects against steam, splashes, and stains while maintaining the organic, tactile feel of the solid American Walnut or White Oak. Unlike veneers, our solid hardwood will never peel or delaminate in humid environments.

Why is there a 3–4 week lead time?

We build every shelf to order in our Long Island shop. Typical production is 3–4 weeks so we can mill and finish solid hardwood to your size. Standalone gallery rail hardware kits usually ship in about 1–2 weeks.

Can I install these myself, or do I need a contractor?

The HOVR™ system is designed for a streamlined DIY installation. We include a "White-Glove" hardware suite (cleat, structural screws, and precision drill bit) to remove the guesswork. If you can use a level and a power drill, you can achieve a professional-grade, "zero-gap" result.

What is the difference between your solid wood and "real wood" veneers?

Veneer is a paper-thin slice of wood glued over compressed sawdust (MDF). Our shelves are 100% solid, furniture-grade hardwood. Solid wood possesses a natural warmth, weight, and "tactile soul" that veneers cannot replicate. Furthermore, solid wood is an investment—it can be sanded and refinished 50 years from now.
