Our Signature Take on Modern Rustic Style

At The Mortise & The Hare, design is personal. Every curve, joint, and grain pattern tells a story—not just of craftsmanship, but of intention. For years, we’ve gravitated toward a certain look in our work. It wasn’t quite farmhouse, not fully Scandinavian, and never industrial. It had the warmth of a cabin, the lines of a gallery piece, and the tactile soul of something handmade.

We finally gave it a name: Mod-Lodge™.

And we’re officially in the process of trademarking it.

What is Mod-Lodge™?

Mod-Lodge™ is a design philosophy rooted in modern rustic living. It brings together clean, contemporary lines with organic textures and timeless materials—real hardwoods, natural finishes, and joinery that lasts. It’s a style that belongs equally in a Brooklyn brownstone or a Hudson Valley retreat.

Think:

• White oak floating shelves with sculpted edges

• Gallery rails in raw brass

• Oversized charcuterie cabinets with painted beadboard and handmade hooks

• Coffee tables with softened angles, nestled beneath velvet sectionals and vintage rugs

It’s warmth without clutter. Craft without pretense.

Why Trademark a Design Style?

Because we believe in clarity—for our clients, our collaborators, and our brand.

We’ve had designers ask for our “look.” Now, we can name it. We’ve had customers tell us they want that same feel in another room. Now, we can deliver it, cohesively. And as we grow, Mod-Lodge™ becomes the guiding thread through it all—from shelving to tables, lighting to layout.

This trademark isn’t about gatekeeping—it’s about storytelling. It’s about building something recognizable, distinctive, and true to who we are as a workshop.

What’s Next?

We’ll be expanding our Mod-Lodge™ collection soon with a curated set of pieces—both custom and ready-to-ship—that reflect this signature look. That includes:

• Oversized floating shelves in new finishes

• Painted and natural-wood cabinetry pieces

• Matching tables, benches, and organizers

• Lighting accents and hardware developed in-house

And yes, you’ll be seeing the Mod-Lodge™ stamp on every one of them.

If you’re a designer, builder, or homeowner interested in incorporating Mod-Lodge™ into your next project, reach out. We’d love to collaborate.

Thanks for following our journey—and for supporting American craftsmanship with a point of view.
